Foreign Languages and Cultures 2019 – Student Research and Scholarly Activity Contest Conference

On May 15, 2019, the Department of Language Pedagogy and Intercultural Studies organized an annual student conference where the students of the department presented their research and scholarly work. This year, there were two participants from among the bachelor´s degree and six from the master´s degree students. While the bachelor´s degree students presented linguistically oriented works, the master´s section scope was wider, and in addition to linguistics, the areas of didactics of English, literature, culture and translatology were also represented.

In their presentations, the authors of individual works first presented theoretical starting points and subsequently they focused on the results of their research. This year’s conference brought very interesting findings as well as inspiring stimuli for further research. The quality of all contributions was at a high level, and the evaluation committee had a difficult task of selecting only one from each section which was to be awarded first place. After evaluating all the criteria, first place in the master’s section was awarded to Bc. Eva Ondrejková. Her extensive research resulted in the compilation of a glossary of technical terms in the field of dentistry. In addition to the carefully elaborate methodology, the committee highlighted, in particular, the practical benefits of her work.

The winner in the bachelor’s section was Klaudia Koberová. The aim of her work was to compare British and American English. The clear results presented by the author of the work have unleashed a lively debate, which also brought inspiration for further exploration.

This year’s student conference can rightfully be considered a success and we hope that in the future the department will continue in this tradition.
