From 10 to 12 March, the Department of English Language and Culture (KAJK) welcomed guests from several secondary schools who accepted the invitation to take part in the event “Sustainability Islands,” dedicated to the themes of sustainability and the protection of our planet. Over the course of three days, the faculty premises were filled with curiosity, discussions, and creative activities prepared for the visitors by students of the Bachelor’s and Master’s study programme in English Language and Literature.
The programme was designed to introduce environmental topics to secondary school students in an engaging and interactive way. Our students prepared educational and creative activities representing individual “islands” of sustainability. Through these activities, participants learned about the importance of thinking about the future of our planet and about the ways each of us can contribute to its protection.
Students, accompanied by their teachers, from the Stredná zdravotnícka škola, the Obchodná akadémia, and Gymnázium Golianova 68 in Nitra accepted the invitation to attend. For many of them, the visit was not only an opportunity to learn more about environmental issues but also a chance to experience the university environment and get a glimpse of academic life.
Our students were very enthusiastic about meeting the secondary school visitors. They invested a great deal of creativity, energy, and pedagogical knowledge gained during their studies into preparing the programme. The meetings therefore served not only as an opportunity to share knowledge but also as a valuable experience for developing the communication and presentation skills of future teachers.
We believe that our young guests left the Sustainability Islands event not only with new knowledge but also with inspiration and motivation to reflect on how each of us can contribute to a more sustainable future for our planet.
